Now that you’ve decided that you may need to make a shift in your business, you may be finding it hard to accept the fact you need to make the shift. I know this may sound odd, but knowing you need to make a change and accepting the change are two different psychological processes.
I am no psychologist but I am going to share with you the process I have used and coach my clients through as they are going through change.
Accepting a business model shift
Here are 3 steps to help process, reassess, and accept a business focus or model shift.
1. Revisit your mission – Make sure you’re clear on your personal and business mission. This is the perfect time to make any changes to ensure your mission is fulfilling, captures your thoughts, and your goals. You may also want to assess if your personal and business mission are aligned.
2. Quantify what making the shift will bring into your business - Get specific on the numbers (number of products you can offer; 1-on-1 clients you can work with; group coaching sessions; webinars, etc). You can estimate but one of the best ways to do this is to do beta testing with your new offer to see how your niche will respond to your changes. Quantifying the changes will help process and visualize why you are making this change in your business. If you are not seeing or estimating positive growth, you should not make a change.
3. Assess if this influx will bring you closer to your larger mission – This sounds easy and obvious, but still ask yourself, “is this change really going to help me achieve and reach my mission?” You may need to ask how is the change different from what you’re doing. If you can utilize the shift as a step in between where your target market is and where you’d like them to be you’re moving in the right direction. If not, then you need to make a bigger shift.
Many times, the needed shift is so minor and simple you’ll be amazed at the results after the shift. I will dare to say, you’ll probably be happier. Your business will be back in a position to achieving not just your professional mission, but your personal.

Great post Monyelle. Quite apt too with the New Year approaching. I think it’s so important for people to revisit their goals and targets on a regular basis. Often they change and it’s important to refresh yourself so that you can always be the very best you can.

I agree Monyelle, taking a new look at your business, goals and mindset is crucial to staying on track and as Lilach put it, it is a great way to start the new year!

You are so right Monyelle. It’s great to revisit that mission statement regularly. It may even pay to do it daily! It’s so easy to get off track, that this aids greatly in maintaining the right course. Thanks for sharing.

You certainly make a good case for keeping your mission statement up to date and clear in your mind. It also makes me wonder just how many marketers have a mission statement.
It is a good bet all the successful ones have!

I really doubt many do and even fewer start their business with one and a vision! Thanks for the comment David!
Change is necessary… if things are not working you have to be willing to make the change.. of course then you reach your comfort zone… you’ll have fears and doubts.. but remember they are only thoughts! Thanks for sharing

Lots of good food for thought. It is the time of year that we all just get plain tired. Holidays are hard emotionally even if they are great. We are all a little more tired and stressed. Refocusing on something that we can control (cause let’s face it there is so much in this business that we cannot control) can help move us forward or get over a trouble spot.

Revisiting our goals, our mission, our why are REALLY important for us to stay motivated. All too often we get busy being busy…and we loose sight of what is really important…this is a great reminder. thx Terry

This is so sadly true, not just with whole business models but even with small adjustments. How many times have I known that I should make a change…but change is disruptive. It takes time to even just set up a new process for doing something. There is a HUGE psychological barrier to making changes.

Monyelle, great post! I really love point #1 regarding revisiting your mission. This is so important to do as it is so easy to get off track. If we keep that mission in front of us daily we can always make corrections if need be. Great post my friend!!

Important points Monyelle. I prefer to reexamine the purpose and vision rather than the mission but when things are not working it is important to reexamine the three you named her. Got to go see part 1 to see what you suggested there. Keeping the faith when discouraged though often requires help. And that can be the challenge – getting the help you really need

I agree with Lilach Bullock. Goals need to be re-assessed for next year. This needs to be done to be more productive.
It does and hopefully is something that was done prior to making your 2012 plans
